Workout in the Park

What a week. I am not sure I have ever clicked refresh so many times on the CNN homepage. Since Monday I have been almost entirely absent from the blog world. My thoughts were in Boston, as I am sure all of yours were as well. And although writing is typically my therapy, the words didn’t come. I instead opted for going out to dinner with my parents, and spending time with Dan and Nola at home. I appreciated the moments that I so often take for granted. I counted my blessings.

Today I am diving back into the blog with a focus on fitness. Last weekend was my inaugural ‘workout in the park’, where I invited friends to come join me for Brooke’s Deck of Cards Workout.

You can only imagine how cool the 6 of us looked doing burpees and the stars that I exchanged for squats. This workout kicked our butts in the best way. I am meeting my friends this morning for our second ‘workout in the park’ and I have yet to decide what that will be, so I should probably get on that.

Paws in the Park 5k

Yesterday morning, Dan, Nola, and I headed out to our ‘Paws in the Park’ 5k. This was our first doggy dash, and I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t crazy excited for it. Dan and I had planned to run the race together, but once we arrived and I sized up the competition, I encouraged him to go ahead without me and to finish as quickly as possible.

Dan and Nola ended up placing 5th overall, insert proud fiancé and mom line here. I was feeling great until mile 2.5, where I experienced a terrible side stitch. I managed to finish in 26 minutes and was happy with my time. I was even happier with the post race treats. Nola and I shared 2 Peanut Butter Clif Bars and would both offer rave reviews.

Following the race, we watched the dogs jumping off the docks. Nola, being the social butterfly that she is, made lots of new friends.

All in all, we had a fantastic time and I would definitely recommend a fun run with dogs. Although I shouldn’t admit it, my quads are especially sore today. Kudos to all you ladies training for and running your 1/2 marathons. I am definitely inspired to get into that kind of shape again.

In Case You Were Wondering

I have been known to eat a carton of Ben & Jerry’s in one sitting. Kudos if you haven’t ever done this. One spoonful into Cinnamon Buns or Milk and Cookies and the ‘only a couple bites’ idea goes out the window. I usually regret my decision afterwards as my body doesn’t entirely love lactose, but you know what they say, you only live once.

ImageI have been acting ridiculous lately, call it hormonal, call it sleep deprived, call it stressed, call it whatever you want, every once in a while, I can admit when I am being crazy. Which I have been, this entire week.

ImageOn that note, sometimes an 8:30 bedtime is necessary. Few things in life make me happier than turning on a  ‘King of Queens’ rerun, snuggling in next to Dan and Nola, and owning my grandma tendencies.
ImageHomemade pizza is reason for excitement. This has made its way into our weekly dinner rotation, and I am not complaining. Its baking time usually allots me the 15 minutes I need to quickly shower and of course, change into my robe and sweatpant power suit.

An Unexpected Trip to the Farmer’s Market

I plan on making tonight’s post a short one, because let’s be honest, by the time I make it to the end of the work week, the fatigue and random thought train is usually making its way through town.  Chugga-chugga-choo-choo

Dan and I stopped at the grocery store tonight for some essentials; a new toy for Nola, Puffins, a rose ylang-ylang bath bomb, and Bisquick. Okay, so maybe ‘essentials’ was the wrong word. Our purchases were more along the line of impulse buys. Regardless, I went a little boy band crazy when we parked and realized that there was a Farmer’s Market in the lot.

ImageI love Farmer’s Markets. I think it is so fun to walk around, to meet the people behind the booths, to try new products, and of course, to take delicious food home! Tonight, we decided on Pineapple and Habanero Sauce and Raspberry Habanero Jam.

ImageI may or may not be pairing these with some cream cheese and wheat thins tonight.

In other news, holla for the weekend!! One of my best friends took the bar exam this week and I am already looking forward to celebrating with her this weekend. Perhaps at a different type of bar. With a margarita in hand.

Give Me The Simple Life

“I got no money in my pockets. I got a hole in my jeans”

Let’s be real, as a mid-20s something, cash isn’t always quite expendable. That being said, I’m not complaining. Over the last couple years, I’ve realized how content I am to live a modest and happy lifestyle. My friends and I rarely go ‘all out’ and find that some of our favorite times end up being while we are sitting on our couches, playing ‘Loaded Questions,’ eating homemade pizza, and discussing life’s most important topics, like who will win ‘The Bachelor,’ and what we want for dessert.

I’ve also found that there happen to be a fair share of affordable options for days and nights out on the town. As the weather warms, my friends and I love to make trips to the beach. We spend the morning making sandwiches and snacks and filling our coolers with drinks and ice. By the time the afternoon rolls around, you can usually find an intense game of sand volleyball or football taking place.

We also have some really cute and quaint shopping areas around us. I love to spend the day window shopping and gathering gift ideas. I am usually able to find a cute bookstore or café in these shopping strands as well, which completes the entire trip. I’m now craving specialty coffee and an afternoon spent reading my new novel.

Some of our best friends just brought home a new dog, meaning that Nola has a lot of puppy play dates in her future. We have our fair share of bars and restaurants around us that allow dogs. Meaning, I can sip a mojito and play fetch at the same time. Score!

ImageLast but not least, I love arcades and bowling. So, I have the same hobbies as a 15 year old boy. Whatever. Dan and I end up spending way too much money for him to win me a new stuffed animal in the claw machine, but otherwise have found this to be a fun and inexpensive way to spend an evening. Image
