The 98 degrees
and rising temperatures can only mean one thing-summer is right around the corner! In preparation for summertime, aka daisy dukes and mid drifts, kidding, kind of, I have been switching up workouts and trying to incorporate moves for all muscles.
During the week, Dan and I usually workout together and will decide each morning where to focus, alternating between abs, arms, legs, and booty. For our weekend workouts with our friends, I love to do sets that include a little bit of everything. A couple weeks ago, we did a circuit that did not disappoint. It has quickly become part of our routine.
And of course, with a workout in the park comes a brunch to follow! Call me crazy, but a hard workout and a satisfying meal afterwards make for the perfect morning.

After a Thursday night Happy Hour and staying out past our bedtime, I welcomed the idea of a Friday night in. My parents are out of town for the weekend, so Dan and I are dog sitting – hence the reason I am up before the sunrise, saving pens from being chewed and blankets from being torn. They’re lucky they’re so cute.
Last night, I was craving chocolate, surprise, surprise, and something about relaxation and sweatpants seems to call for it. So, I decided to make this cheesecake brownie frozen yogurt concoction.
Dan and I were planning to rent a movie, but instead flipped channels between ‘Full House‘ and the NFL Draft. My favorite childhood show + my favorite sport = win win.
I, of course, lived up to my grandma status and fell asleep on the couch before 10:00 PM. That’s alright though, because now, it’s the weekend and I am all like –

What a week. I am not sure I have ever clicked refresh so many times on the CNN homepage. Since Monday I have been almost entirely absent from the blog world. My thoughts were in Boston, as I am sure all of yours were as well. And although writing is typically my therapy, the words didn’t come. I instead opted for going out to dinner with my parents, and spending time with Dan and Nola at home. I appreciated the moments that I so often take for granted. I counted my blessings.
Today I am diving back into the blog with a focus on fitness. Last weekend was my inaugural ‘workout in the park’, where I invited friends to come join me for Brooke’s Deck of Cards Workout.
You can only imagine how cool the 6 of us looked doing burpees and the stars that I exchanged for squats. This workout kicked our butts in the best way. I am meeting my friends this morning for our second ‘workout in the park’ and I have yet to decide what that will be, so I should probably get on that.

The sun and the sand and a drink in my hand.
The beach is not only my happy place, it is my therapy. As we pulled into the resort yesterday, windows down, ‘Barefoot Blue Jean Night’ playing, and water in sight, I felt an authentic happiness, uninhibited by the world.
After checking in, we walked to our favorite restaurant across the street. Dan grabbed the drink menu and we quickly found and ordered our cocktails. I happily decided on rum punch for the evening.
I promised Dan that I would stay up late and was yawning by 8:00. Fail. We stayed at the pool bar for as long as I could keep my eyes open and called it a night. My grandma tendencies continued this morning as I woke to the sun rising.
We headed out for a walk on the beach and checked out the gazebo where we will be getting married.
Before making our way back to Houston, we had brunch at a restaurant overlooking the water. One Peach Bellini and an order of Rustic Cinnamon French Toast later, we were on our way home.
After a weekend of cocktails and all things unhealthy, I am definitely ready to get back on track with my snacks and workouts.

Yesterday morning, Dan, Nola, and I headed out to our ‘Paws in the Park’ 5k. This was our first doggy dash, and I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t crazy excited for it. Dan and I had planned to run the race together, but once we arrived and I sized up the competition, I encouraged him to go ahead without me and to finish as quickly as possible.
Dan and Nola ended up placing 5th overall, insert proud fiancé and mom line here. I was feeling great until mile 2.5, where I experienced a terrible side stitch. I managed to finish in 26 minutes and was happy with my time. I was even happier with the post race treats. Nola and I shared 2 Peanut Butter Clif Bars and would both offer rave reviews.
Following the race, we watched the dogs jumping off the docks. Nola, being the social butterfly that she is, made lots of new friends.
All in all, we had a fantastic time and I would definitely recommend a fun run with dogs. Although I shouldn’t admit it, my quads are especially sore today. Kudos to all you ladies training for and running your 1/2 marathons. I am definitely inspired to get into that kind of shape again.
