A Letter To Me

On the verge of my 26th birthday last year, I wrote ‘a letter to me’ and sent it back in time to the younger version of myself. I would say my former self, but if I’m being honest, I’m still that malt drinking, oversized t-shirt wearing, early to bed, and early to rise girl in a lot of ways. With turning 27 on its way next week, I thought it would be fun to make a spin-off of last year’s post and this time send it to the future version of myself.

So, to the future me, SURPRISE! You’re still perfectly imperfect. Once you start laughing, it’s hard to stop, you usually spill on yourself at least once a day, you don’t wash the sheets as often as you should, you’re embarrassed that your dogs aren’t better behaved, and you sweat more than the average person. And although it doesn’t always feel like it, those are good things, because they make you who you are.

Take chances, even when they feel scary, because most likely, they always will. More often than not, those leap of faith moments are the most empowering. And if you fail (which at times, you will) keep going.

Know and recognize the value in exploration, through travel, walks on the beach, conversation, reading, and writing. After all, “It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” ― Ernest Hemingway

Believe in yourself, protect your marriage, invest in relationships, follow your intuition, express gratitude, and try not to spend too much time worrying about what other people think. Live, laugh, and love. You’ve got this.

Selection Sunday – Date Night Edition

Happy September! I hope that everyone is enjoying the long weekend! We kicked off the College Football Season yesterday with plenty of food and drinks to go around.

Tomorrow is Dan’s birthday and I will be setting aside my Cougar Crown for the next 6 months. We will be celebrating by road tripping it to Dallas next weekend for the Giants-Cowboys game. Still, I wanted to do something fun for his ‘actual’ birthday weekend, too. So, I came up with date ideas for him to choose from when he gets home from work tonight.

How are you spending Labor Day Weekend?! Tell me I am not the only one who enjoyed a margarita and nachos yesterday! 🙂

26

First things first, Happy Friday! I am writing this morning from the comforts of my couch on my new iPad, a fantastic birthday gift from my fabulous fiancé! I turned 26 yesterday, meaning that Quarter Century Southern Living isn’t quite as relevant as it was when I first started this blog one year ago. Leave it to me to choose an age and location specific domain.

Birthdays have a way of showing you how incredibly blessed you are. My soon to be sister-in-law, De, wrote a birthday shoutout post, that in the midst of a stressful morning, made me smile. I also happened to receive an Edible Arrangements bouquet from my friend, Emily. The fact that she would send food over flowers shows how well she knows me.

Every gift, card, surprise visit, phone call, and text message meant the world to me. One of my best friends from college took home the prize for creativity as she sent me this –

Which, at first, looked to be a wedding magazine. Again, my friends can read me like a book in that when I opened the front cover, I found this instead –

I even managed to stay awake past 10:00 PM, contrary to Dan’s romantic card to me.

A Letter To Me

My posts have been a bit all over the place lately, I realize. In fact, I tip my hat to you, or curtsy, if that’s more your style, for continuing to read my haphazard writing. My goal for today is to stick to a theme. But, I’m not making any promises.

With my 26th birthday on the horizon, I can’t help but think how crazy it is that it has been 10 years since I turned 16 years old and felt so on top of the world backing out of my family’s driveway in my hand-me-down Mercury Tracer. A lot has happened in my life since then, and I would love to take a page out of Brad Paisley’s book, and write a letter to me and send it back in time to myself at…16. I would start by saying…

It’s okay that you suck at algebra. You will be grateful that you struggled to pass and that you had to work hard. Not everything in life comes easy.

Tell the people you love that you love them. Even though it seems like you will always have another chance to say how you feel, there are no guarantees in life.

Be present. Enjoy the pep rallies, football games, cross country meets, state soccer, and sleepovers.

Realize how amazing your parents are. Stop worrying if your mom hears the guys in your grade cuss, or if your dad comes to grab a pop while you and your friends are watching a movie in the basement. Your parents will end up being the people you choose to spend your weekends with, believe it or not.

Be you. It’s okay that you aren’t the prettiest, smartest, most popular, or most athletic girl. Be yourself and be okay with it.

Respect everyone. Don’t ever rank people or treat people a certain way according to what they wear, how much money they make, what they do, or where they live.

Little Things to Love

Even though this season of ‘The Bachelor‘ is over and I am still in my work pants at almost 7:00 PM, I am excited to write today’s post and to share all the little things I am loving this week.

I am loving ‘The Biggest Loser‘, leave it to me to trade one reality show for another, following some of my favorite bloggers on Instagram and Twitter, if I haven’t found you yet, call me leave your name maybe, making m&m rice krispie treats in the microwave, 1 minute to pure joy, and running 5k races, even if they are unorganized and have no bibs and chips.

ImageI am loving that Dan and I are taking Friday off from work, that I get to decide what kind of birthday cake I want this week, that my mom will be back in town tomorrow, that I have plans to be in bed tonight by 8:30, that ABC Family and Nick at Nite play reruns of ‘Full House‘, and that I walk outside to palm trees every day. If only someone could have a pina colada waiting for me.
